I'm completely fascinated by hummers, but fail miserably at taking shots of these little "rockets". The bird is tack sharp, the lighting is fantastic as well. Hands Down...one of the best hummer shots I've seen. Bravo!

It just requires a little patience and some knowledge!<[link]>. A single, on camera strobe(diffused) will work during the day, but not at dawn or dusk; you want to keep the iridescence down. Set the strobe to manual and the camera to its fastest sync speed. Adjust your settings in manual. I usually keep my strobe set at 1/16 power, but it will be dependent on the type strobe you have.

Thank you for the link, how kind of you to share! I really like them with the wings blurred, like the way you have done in this pic. I find yours very inspiring. Thank you!

That's not a problem either. For blurred wings, I take the photo during the day in shade with an assist from my strobes to work as fill flashes. I can set my strobes to varying power to get several wing stops or, if it's bright enough, just use the camera set at 1/250 sec. w/o fill flash. When using a single, diffused fill flash I heavily diffuse it by stuffing a kleenix between the diffuser and the strobe(the diffusers are the ones that usually come with the flash), I set the flash for 1/64 or 1/128 power.

I like how you captured the moment when the tip of the wing turns its direction of movement, Walt! :aww:
