I've never seen all the details and each individual feather of a hummingbird before. Truly beautiful picture, I don't know how you've done it, but it's amazing!

The 1/250 shutter speed is the highest sync on the 7D. The actual shutter speed is dictated by the setting on the strobes. I don't remember the actual strobe power, but looking at the photo I'd say it was about 1/8 seconds. That's about 1/10,000 seconds. Check this link if you're interested<[link]>
Any other question, just ask.

This is fantastic! Do you have any articles or blogs on the techniques you use? My son love's hummingbirds but I don't know how I'd ever capture it on film!

I'll attach the sites I used to get going! I've simplified some of the procedures and use some that they advise against because I like the effects.

The camera/lens info is on the right of the photos. Drop me a note if you have further questions. I won't be on DA too much for the forceable future due to my wife's illness. I will, however, read notes and answer.

Walt,

Thanks so much for taking the time to post those links, and I wish you and your wife the best and her a speedy recovery! My son and I are going to enjoy the challenge of capturing these birds this spring/summer.

Best of luck and I hope you get to grace us with your photos well into the future!

Regards,
Trevor

Adjust the camera so a photo taken without a strobe is very dark. Set the shutter to ~100 and try to keep the ISO low. Set the strobe to manual and reduce the power output anywhere from 1/2 to 1/128 power. At this point you are using the strobe as the shutter. 1/16 power is about 1/20,000 seconds. Adjust your setting so you light the area of the subject with the strobe.
